How to write podcast episode titles that get clicks
If you’ve ever spent ages tweaking your podcast episode titles, only to feel unsure if they’re working, you’re not alone. In our scroll-happy world, your title is your first chance to catch a potential listener’s attention. It’s make or break.
Your podcast titles don’t need to be clever or catchy. They need to be clear.
I see it all the time. Long, overcomplicated titles that get cut off halfway in podcast apps, leaving your audience guessing what the episode is about. So, what can you do instead?
Keep them short and snappy
Aim to fit your hook and keywords into the first 60 characters. This makes sure your titles stay visible on mobile devices, where most people discover podcasts. If you’re sharing “three ways to plan a month of episodes,” say that in plain English. Avoid clever wordplay that could leave your audience scratching their heads.
Clarity over cleverness
Fancy titles might sound impressive to you, but clarity always wins. Tell your listeners exactly what they’ll learn or why they should care. Questions work well here too. For example, “How long should my podcast episode be?” or “Rebrand your podcast or start fresh?” Both of these speak directly to what your listeners are already wondering.
Numbers for the win
Titles like “3 Things You Need to Know Before Launching Your Podcast” or “5 Tips for Naming Your Podcast” instantly tell your audience what to expect and make your episode feel easy to digest.
Power words (but no clickbait)
Sprinkle in a few power words like best, easy, quick, or essential if they genuinely fit. For instance, “Easy Growth Hacks for Your Podcast” or “The Best Ways to Repurpose Your Podcast Content.” These words add a bit of energy and show your audience that you’ve got valuable information to share. Just steer clear of clickbait, trust is more important than a quick click.
Recap your titles
If you’re unsure about your current titles, here’s a quick exercise:
- Review your last three episode titles. Are they clear? Could they be shorter?
- Swap out any fancy phrases for plain language.
