Finding the best release day for your podcast

One of the questions I get asked all the time is: what’s the best day to release a podcast episode? You may have heard advice like “always publish on a Monday,” but it’s not that simple. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to choose the best release day for your podcast, based on your audience, your goals, and your lifestyle. By the end, you’ll know how to test different days, use your analytics, and find a schedule that works both for your listeners and for you.

Are Mondays really the best day to release podcast episodes?

You’ve probably heard people say “Mondays are the best day to release.” But Mondays are crowded. If your listeners already subscribe to a bunch of shows that drop on a Monday, yours can easily get lost.

Think about your podcast ideal listener

Always start with your Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA). What does their week look like? When are they most likely to have time and headspace to listen?

  • Busy parents might catch up on a Thursday or Saturday.
  • Corporate professionals often prefer Tuesday–Thursday mornings after they’ve got over the chaos of Monday and are feeling more settled.
  • Creatives might save podcasts for the end of the week when they’re winding down.

There’s no right answer, it depends on your audience.

How to test your podcast release day

1. Map your listener’s day. Do they listen on the school run, commute, at the gym, or with a Friday glass of wine? Aim to publish just before those times.

2. Check your analytics. Your host platform shows where people are listening from. Use that to choose the best local time zone.

3. Try quieter days. Fewer podcasts drop on Thursdays and weekends, this could help you stand out.

4. Be consistent. Whatever you choose, stick with it. Listeners love knowing when to expect you.

5. Ask your audience. Run a poll on Instagram or ask in your newsletter. Your listeners will tell you what works for them.

What time should you release your podcast?

  • Morning commute: 6:00am in your audience’s main time zone.
  • Lunch break: 11:00am is good for many listeners.
  • Evening wind-down: 7:00–8:00pm works for lifestyle shows.

You could try one time for a month, then adjust based on feedback and data.

Make it work for you too

Your schedule matters just as much as your audience’s. If editing takes you ages, pick a release day that gives you space. You can also outsource editing, show notes, and promotion to free up your time. And remember, releasing fortnightly is better than burning out and stopping altogether.

Quick cheat sheet

  • Monday: Crowded, only if your ICA expects it.
  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Strong for routines.
  • Thursday: Less crowded, great for visibility.
  • Friday: Perfect for wrap-up or planning shows.
  • Weekend: Good for binge-listening and lifestyle content.

At the end of the day, if your listeners like your podcast it doesn’t matter what day/time you release. If they follow you, your show will pop up in their feed and they’ll listen to you when they’re ready. Try not to stress too much about release days.
