Starting a podcast has been a journey filled with challenges, fears, and significant learning experiences. As a podcast consultant, the pressure to launch my own podcast perfectly was immense. However, I’ve come to realise that embracing imperfect action is the key to progress and growth.
Why I Decided to Start My Own Podcast
Being a podcast consultant, I’ve always recommended various strategies to my clients. I wanted to try these strategies myself to see what works and what doesn’t. This firsthand experience allows me to better support my clients. Additionally, podcasting offers immense benefits for business owners. It helps build authentic relationships, enhances your brand, and allows for content repurposing. It’s a powerful tool for expanding your professional network and reaching a wider audience.
Overcoming Fears and Perfectionism
The fear of making mistakes and not being a confident public speaker held me back for a long time. There was also the fear of what others might think—questions like “What if no one listens?” and “What if my voice is annoying?” plagued my mind. But I realised that these fears are natural and shouldn’t stop me from pursuing my goals.
I’ve had significant support from various coaches—voice, confidence on camera, and social media. Their guidance helped me overcome my fears and build the confidence needed to speak publicly. Moreover, attending Toastmasters regularly played a crucial role in improving my public speaking skills.
The Importance of Taking Imperfect Action
Perfectionism can be a significant barrier. This realisation came when I recorded my first two episodes twice because I wasn’t satisfied with the first version. However, striving for perfection can delay progress. The key is to start, learn, and improve along the way. Interviewing guests was another challenge as I had no prior experience. But I took the plunge, and with each interview, my confidence grew.
If you’re considering starting a podcast, I encourage you to take that step, even if you have doubts or fears. Everyone starts somewhere, and it’s okay to take imperfect action. Building confidence in public speaking and sharing your authentic voice are essential steps in this journey. Remember, podcasting can significantly transform your business and open up new opportunities.
