How to Start a Podcast When You Don’t Feel Ready

You don’t need a studio or huge following to launch your podcast

If you’ve been sitting on a podcast idea for a while but haven’t hit record yet, you’re not alone.

And the good news is, you don’t need a fancy studio, a polished voice, or a massive audience to get started.

There’s so much noise out there about what you “must have” before launching a podcast: a full video setup, professional editing, a huge Instagram following. But you only need a message you care about, and the courage to start.

When I launched Podcasting for Business Owners, I didn’t have a professional studio. I didn’t even feel confident speaking into a mic. I chose to start with audio-only because I knew if I tried to do everything all at once, I’d never launch. Starting small is what built my confidence. Every episode made me a little braver.

And the same is true for you.

Here’s what I recommend instead of waiting for perfection:

  • Start with audio-only if that feels easier
  • Focus on your message, not on perfect production
  • Know that your audience connects with your voice and ideas, not your lighting setup
  • Give yourself permission to grow and evolve over time

If you’re passionate about your topic and ready to help your ideal audience, that’s more important than sounding polished or having 10,000 followers.

Podcasting builds trust, not just visibility, and it keeps working for you long after you publish your episodes.

The biggest mistake I see?

Waiting until you feel “ready.” Confidence doesn’t come before you start, it grows as you take action.

If you’re wondering where to begin, here’s a simple action plan:

  • Choose a podcast name and define your ideal listener
  • Record a short trailer episode introducing your podcast
  • Record three launch episodes and at least three more for upcoming weeks
  • Get a basic microphone like the Blue Yeti and a simple editing program like Audacity or GarageBand
  • Host your podcast on a reliable platform like Buzzsprout or Captivate
